Poste Italiane launches $12.5 billion bid to acquire Telecom Italia
Italy’s state-controlled postal and financial services group Poste Italiane has announced a bid to acquire Telecom Italia (TIM) in a deal valued at approximately €10.8 billion ($12.5 billion).
The offer includes a combination of cash and shares and represents a premium over the current market valuation of TIM. Poste already holds a significant stake in the operator and aims to consolidate its position through the acquisition.
If completed, the transaction would create an integrated platform combining telecommunications, cloud services, and data management capabilities. The combined entity is expected to generate around €27 billion in revenue and approximately €5 billion in operating profit.
Poste Italiane anticipates annual synergies of up to €700 million, driven by cost optimization and operational efficiencies. The deal also aligns with broader European efforts to strengthen control over critical digital infrastructure and enhance technological sovereignty.
The proposed acquisition reflects a growing trend of consolidation in the European telecom sector, as operators seek scale to offset declining margins and fund investments in next-generation networks and digital services.
