SpaceX has announced plans to build a large semiconductor manufacturing facility called Terafab near Houston, Texas. The project is designed to produce logic and memory devices optimized for artificial intelligence workloads.
The new complex is expected to support the technology stack behind robotics and satellite-based computing infrastructure. In particular, Terafab chips are intended for use in Tesla’s Optimus robots as well as in systems tied to data processing in orbit.
The planned site will cover more than 9.3 million square meters. SpaceX says the first phase of the project will require an investment of $16.8 billion, while total spending could eventually reach $119 billion. The company estimates the facility will create about 3,000 jobs.
Terafab would become one of the largest private semiconductor manufacturing projects and could strengthen demand for specialized chips used in AI infrastructure, robotics, and distributed computing systems.
