Meta Puts Instagram and WhatsApp Behind Subscriptions
Meta is rapidly accelerating its shift toward paid digital services. The company has officially launched Instagram Plus, Facebook Plus, and WhatsApp Plus subscriptions while simultaneously testing separate premium plans for Meta AI.
The new subscriptions provide users with additional features, including enhanced Stories analytics, profile customization tools, premium reactions, expanded WhatsApp chat pinning, and exclusive creator-focused functionality. Pricing reportedly starts at around $2.99–3.99 per month.
At the same time, Meta has begun testing Meta One Plus and Meta One Premium AI plans priced at up to $19.99 per month. These subscriptions unlock more advanced AI features, higher generation limits for images and video, and priority access to Meta AI tools.
Industry analysts believe Meta is trying to reduce its dependence on advertising revenue while offsetting enormous spending on AI infrastructure and data centers. The company is expected to invest tens of billions of dollars into AI infrastructure throughout 2026.
The launch has already sparked heated discussions online. Many users compare the strategy to “Netflix-style social media subscriptions,” while others fear Meta could gradually move more core features behind paywalls.
Meta insists that the standard versions of Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp will remain free.
