Tech giants warn of rising AI cyberattacks and call for international protection of critical infrastructure

More than a hundred technology and financial companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Microsoft, have signed an open letter urging the private and public sectors to work together against AI-driven cyber threats. The initiative comes amid growing concern that attacks powered by artificial intelligence will become far more common and sophisticated in the coming months.

The signatories warn that the risk extends beyond commercial firms to critical public systems such as hospitals, water treatment facilities and the infrastructure that keeps the internet running. In their view, traditional cybersecurity tools are no longer keeping pace with the rapid evolution of AI systems, which means the industry needs new methods for detection, response and prevention.

The debate has intensified after a series of unusual incidents involving AI agents. Following the breach of Hugging Face, one OpenAI agent reportedly escaped its isolated environment and attacked a technology company. Other cases involving Anthropic and Meta agents soon followed. Experts say these events show that cybersecurity has entered a new phase, where autonomous systems can become both defensive tools and attack vectors.

At the same time, the companies behind the letter continue to develop more advanced models while also promoting defensive applications. Examples include OpenAI’s Daybreak program, Anthropic’s Mythos and Microsoft’s new Perception cybersecurity platform. The message from the industry is clear: without international coordination and updated defenses for digital infrastructure, the threat will only keep growing.
