SFR acquisition deal could reshape Europe’s telecom landscape

The European telecom industry is facing one of its largest market changes in recent years as a consortium led by Bouygues Telecom, with participation from Orange and Free-iliad, agreed to acquire SFR from Altice France.

The transaction is valued at €20.35 billion, including debt, and could significantly change the competitive landscape of the French telecom sector.

If approved by regulators, France’s mobile market could move from four major operators to three, with Orange, Bouygues Telecom and Free becoming the main players.

The deal highlights a broader European telecom trend: operators are looking for consolidation opportunities as competition increases, margins remain under pressure and companies need additional resources to invest in 5G, fiber networks, cloud services and enterprise solutions.

For telecom markets in the CIS region, the SFR deal demonstrates how mature telecom markets are evolving. Operators are increasingly focusing not only on subscriber numbers but also on infrastructure efficiency, B2B services and digital platforms.
