Global investments in connectivity exceed $82 billion (ITU initiative)

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has announced that total investment commitments under its Partner2Connect initiative have exceeded $82 billion. The program is designed to expand internet access to the approximately 2.2 billion people who remain offline globally.

The initiative brings together governments, telecom operators, and technology companies to accelerate the development of digital infrastructure, particularly in underserved and remote regions. Investments are focused not only on network deployment but also on improving affordability and digital inclusion.

The announcement, made in the context of Mobile World Congress 2026, highlights a shift in the global telecom agenda—from expanding nominal coverage to ensuring meaningful connectivity and usage. While network availability has increased significantly in recent years, a large portion of the population still lacks access due to cost barriers, limited digital skills, or insufficient infrastructure.

Partner2Connect is positioned as a key coordination platform for aligning public and private sector efforts, reinforcing the role of connectivity as a foundation for economic growth and digital transformation.
